**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was coming. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and cautious, entering this new phase felt daunting. However, as I reflect now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a significant worry for you. I recall my very first day moving into my accommodation—I remained in my room the whole day, too anxious to go outside and introduce myself. Yet, as I reflect today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve had. Imperial has become like a second home, and it all began with stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations.
The most critical lesson I took away? Make that move early on. Even if you’re feeling unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking and social activities designed for meeting new people. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to connect with others who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to experience self-doubt when you witness others studying hard and feel like you’re falling behind.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential abilities you can develop during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting aspects of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science faculty. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any issues we encounter.
Though I didn’t fully capitalize on pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to establish connections with lecturers and support staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support offered—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I harbored before commencing university were mostly baseless. There are abundant support structures in place, from staff to peers, which can aid you in overcoming challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s feasible to juggle academic demands while enjoying a rewarding and fulfilling university life.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, seize the opportunities, seek help when necessary, and make sure to savor the experience!
