**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxieties, fears, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase was quite intimidating. However, reflecting now, I can see an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of joy! So, what insights did I gain, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely something that concerns you too. I vividly remember my first day moving into residence a few days before the official term began. I spent that entire day secluded in my room, too hesitant to venture outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it took was engaging in a little small talk with others who were equally uncertain.
So, what have I taken away from this? I’ve learned that making a move at the start of the year is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, I’ve realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied spectrum of individuals in the course and the university, you’re bound to discover those who connect with you.
### Facing the Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and even more so between the first term and the second. Being thrust into such a setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance. You might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. But here’s the truth: everyone is navigating through the same challenges. If you find something puzzling, it’s likely that others feel just as lost. So, don’t hold back from seeking assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year—ask for support from your fellow students and faculty!
### Encouragement from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the team within the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and are fully aware of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, addressing any concerns we had. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I do wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to better connect with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can be incredibly beneficial for your journey. My most significant insight from this experience is to take full advantage of the support that is accessible to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to help alleviate those emotions. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
