**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), and the idea of diving into something so unfamiliar was intimidating for someone like me—who was once shy and reserved. Now, reflecting on the past year, I see it filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what have I truly learned, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I confronted was the task of making friends. This often stands as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with my feelings. I remember my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced. I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—people who feel like a second family here at Imperial.

So, what did this experience teach me? I recognized the importance of taking that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a multitude of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others in similar situations. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another major obstacle was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable shift from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes waver your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re falling behind.

What supported me during this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others share the same sentiment. The essential lesson? Don’t shy away from asking for assistance. This could be the most crucial advice for first-year students—connect with your peers and instructors when you seek help.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I must stress how fantastic the Materials department is. The staff truly want you to succeed and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They keep in constant touch with us throughout the year and are always willing to hear our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier.

At the onset of the year, I decided to take a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form better connections with the faculty, which has been immensely beneficial. There are various ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve come to understand that I am never alone. More significantly, I’ve learned how to enjoy my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
