**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I encountered a whirlwind of nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was on the horizon. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, the prospect of venturing into the unknown felt overwhelming. However, reflecting on it now, I realize that the past academic year has been a period of tremendous personal development, challenges, and a great deal of fun. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the major obstacles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students, and I was no exception. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating a few simple conversations with others who were similarly positioned.
What did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are ample ice-breaker events and chances to socialize. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of personalities throughout the course and campus, you’re bound to connect with individuals who align with you.
### Managing the Academic Load
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more notable. This can certainly impact your confidence, especially when you notice others studying and feel like you’re lagging. However, here’s the truth: everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This was arguably the most pivotal lesson I learned during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and faculty for help.
### Establishing Connections with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors earnestly want you to thrive, and they recognize the challenges students face. They foster open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our feedback and extending support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had exploited it sooner.
At the year’s onset, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that is available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Ultimately, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. There are abundant support systems in place, spanning from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that you’re never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while also enjoying the university experience, and I’ve become more self-assured.
Looking back, I take pride in my progress, and I eagerly anticipate what the upcoming years will bring.
