**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what exactly has this year imparted to me, and what is my current position?
### Making Connections: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Experience
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and meet others. Jump ahead to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all initiated with conversations with individuals in alike situations.
So, what did I glean from this experience? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to mingle. Above all, I understood that being authentic is the best method. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those who share your vibe.
### Managing the Workload: A Notable Increase
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can undermine your confidence, particularly when you notice others appearing to cope well. You may feel inadequate, but here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are puzzled too.
The most crucial lesson I took away from my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, don’t think twice about reaching out. This straightforward action can have a tremendous impact.
### Guidance from Faculty: An Essential Asset
Regarding faculty, the assistance from the Materials department has been outstanding. They sincerely want students to thrive and are fully cognizant of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, providing understanding and solutions. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not taking advantage of it earlier.
At the outset of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage more with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway here is to fully embrace the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Accepting the Journey
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and throughout university was mostly unfounded. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never facing challenges alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
