**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been timid and reserved, plunging into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting back, I can recognize that this academic year has been filled with significant personal growth, obstacles, and a good dose of enjoyment. But what have I truly learned, and what’s my current standing?

### Building Friendships: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Endeavor

One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of commencing university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever held. Here at Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family.

What was my takeaway from this? I learned that making that initial move is always worth it. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there’s no need to worry! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to mingle with others in similar circumstances are commonplace. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re certain to connect with others who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Workload: A Challenging Learning Curve

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the subject material. There was definitely a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.

What guided me through this was the awareness that everyone is similarly situated. If you find something perplexing, chances are, others are grappling with it as well. The most vital lesson I unearthed in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from peers or faculty, reaching out for assistance is essential.

### The Significance of Support: Faculty and Pastoral Care

On the subject of support, I cannot emphasize enough how outstanding the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter challenges. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication concerning any issues we encountered. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year concluded, but I wish I had sought it out earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a representative for year well-being. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty on a deeper level, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with staff members, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway here? Utilize the help and support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much!

### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive support offered by both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never solitary. More importantly, I grasped how to juggle the enjoyment of university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

In summary, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey—one brimming with growth, knowledge, and friendships that I will treasure for many years to come.
