**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt like a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, trials, and plenty of enjoyment. But what did I truly gain from this experience, and what is my current standing?

### Making Connections: The First Major Hurdle

One of the most stressful challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects for many new students when they commence university. If you find yourself reading this as a future student, you may share this concern. On my inaugural day moving into my dorm—just a few days prior to the term’s official start—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I’m proudly able to say that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships of my life. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others who were equally uncertain. So, what have I taken away from this? I’ve realized that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fret not—there will be countless ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections. The most vital lesson I’ve learned is that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse student body, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

### Facing the Workload

Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. It was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an academic atmosphere can often dent your confidence. It’s easy to glance around and perceive others as excelling more than you.

Nonetheless, one encouraging thought that helped me was the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most critical lesson I gleaned from my first year—reach out for support from your peers and faculty. You are not on this journey alone.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the trials students face. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until late in the year, but I regret not having utilized it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I embraced the opportunity to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty on a deeper level, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with the staff, and prioritizing this is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehensions I harbored before and during university were mostly unwarranted. Numerous support systems are established, from staff to fellow students, which can help alleviate those fears. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoyment and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
