**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been timid and introverted, immersing myself in this new environment felt like a monumental challenge. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what precisely has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered early in the year was the quest to make friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be feeling a similar sense of trepidation. On my first day of moving into my residence a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did I take away from this? I learned that making an effort at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. Even if you’re unsure or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breaker activities and occasions to connect with others. Most critically, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of people across the course and the institution, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was undeniably significant, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a setting can undermine your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel inadequate by comparison.
What facilitated my journey through this was the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I’ve learned during my first year—do not shy away from asking for help from your classmates and faculty.
### Fostering Connections with Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the educators in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and comprehend the obstacles that students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept us well-informed, addressing our queries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had realized its benefits earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with the faculty, and doing so is one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support that’s accessible to you. You can never seek too much help!
### Concluding Remarks
In conclusion, this year has revealed that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. There exists a vast array of support, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
