**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been reserved and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I gained from this experience, and where do I stand now?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating challenges of starting university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life—both within my course and throughout the university.
I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it began with casual conversations and connecting with fellow students in similar situations. What did I learn from this experience? It’s vital to take that initial step at the beginning of the academic year, even if you don’t feel entirely prepared. Don’t fret if it takes time to feel at ease—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more profound. Being thrust into this new setting can sometimes shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling behind. But here’s the truth: everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too.
The most significant lesson I acquired in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, don’t be afraid to ask for help. This simple gesture can create a substantial impact.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of staff, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. Throughout the year, they kept in close touch with us to resolve any issues we faced. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with the staff more closely, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit. My main takeaway here? Utilize the support that’s at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the nervousness I felt before and during university was often baseless. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone. More importantly, I discovered how to enjoy my time while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
