**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was preparing to begin my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and introverted person, the thought of immersing myself in university life was intimidating. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current standing?
### Building Friendships: The Initial Hurdle
A major challenge of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it only took some simple conversations with others in the same boat.
What did I take away from this? I realized that making that first move is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t stress! There will be an abundance of social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I grasped that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another major hurdle was acclimating to the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was evidently a significant increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even sharper. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel inadequate. However, one helpful reminder was that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something difficult, chances are, others are too. So, don’t be hesitant to seek assistance! This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year—never hesitate to connect with your peers and faculty for help.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of faculty, the educators within the Materials department are phenomenal. They sincerely wish for you to succeed and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open regarding any issues we were experiencing. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to establish a better rapport with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the support available to you—you can never have too much encouragement!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has highlighted that the apprehensions I had prior to beginning university, and even throughout the year, were mostly unfounded. There are countless support mechanisms available, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never completely alone, and I’ve figured out how to strike a balance between enjoying my time and managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
