**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quiet and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I view it as a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely a concern that resonates with you as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entirety of that day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family while at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations.
So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking a proactive step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events are designed to facilitate interactions with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to connect with those who vibe with you.
### Navigating the Academic Load
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was notably significant, with an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this atmosphere can undermine your confidence, especially when observing your peers studying and feeling as though you’re lagging. However, here’s the reality: everyone faces similar struggles. If you find something challenging, there’s a strong likelihood that others are too.
The most crucial lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out when you’re in a bind is essential for achieving success.
### Aid from the Faculty
Speaking of the faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the challenges faced by students. Throughout the year, there was ongoing dialogue between the staff and students regarding various issues we encountered. Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, proving to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unfounded. A plethora of support resources is available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help alleviate those anxieties. I’ve learned that I’m never alone on this journey, and I’ve discovered how to harmonize enjoying university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
