**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was coming my way. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into university life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I view it as a time of significant development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most formidable challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share this concern. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before the term was set to begin, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from a handful of simple dialogues with folks in the same situation.
So, what has been my takeaway? The trick is to take that chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another pivotal challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Being in such a demanding environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when witnessing peers studying while feeling like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re grappling with something, it’s likely that others are too.
The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, don’t shy away from reaching out for help. It’s an essential skill to cultivate early.
### The Significance of Staff Support
On the topic of staff, I can’t emphasize enough how incredible the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors sincerely wish for your success and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. They maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year, addressing any worries we may have. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This role granted me the opportunity to connect with staff on a deeper level, which was immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to establish rapport with staff, and it’s one of the greatest steps you can take for your own benefit. My biggest insight from this experience is to leverage the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In essence, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the vast support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never solitary in confronting challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to strike a balance between enjoying university life and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
