**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student, and the prospect of engaging in this new journey was intimidating for someone like me, who has always been introverted and reserved. Reflecting on it now, I realize that this past academic year has been a period of significant personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment. But what exactly did I discover, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely something weighing on your mind as well. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s official commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at Imperial, particularly among my peers in the course. I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others who were feeling equally apprehensive.
So, what have I learned? I learned that taking an initiative at the onset of the year makes all the difference. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to mingle with others. Above all, I realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are certain to find those who align with your values.
### Managing the Academic Load and Challenges
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more pronounced transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can at times undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying diligently and feel as though you’re lagging. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar waters. If you find something perplexing, chances are there are others grappling with the same issues. The most vital lesson I gleaned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out.
### The Value of Support: Faculty and Well-Being Services
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter hurdles. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge stronger connections with the staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so could be one of the best decisions you make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Achieving Balance
In conclusion, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxious feelings I experienced before and during university were often unwarranted. A wealth of support exists from both staff and fellow students to assist you in overcoming any obstacles. I’ve come to understand that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to relish my experience despite the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
