**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation about what was to come. I was about to begin my inaugural year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of significant personal development, obstacles faced, and a lot of enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the task of making new connections. If you are a potential student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my very first day in student housing, just days before the semester started, I remained in my room the whole day, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—individuals who feel like family.
What have I discovered? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous social events and chances to interact with others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another hurdle was adjusting to the increased demands and complexity of university coursework. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more extreme. It’s all too easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when observing others in their studies, assuming they have everything under control.
One thing that proved helpful for me was keeping in mind that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you find something confusing, chances are others are facing the same challenges. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is one of the crucial skills to hone during your first year—reach out to classmates and instructors whenever you require guidance.
### The Significance of Pursuing Help
This leads me to another vital lesson: the faculty in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive. They sincerely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open dialogue with us and offered a variety of support services.
I didn’t fully utilize the emotional support options available to me until the year’s conclusion, and I wish I had taken better advantage of them earlier. At the start of the academic year, I took a leap by volunteering as a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members—something I found immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important takeaway? Utilize all the support at your disposal—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Final Thoughts
Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the anxieties and fears I harbored before commencing university were mostly unfounded. There are ample support mechanisms in place—be it from faculty or fellow students—ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic responsibilities while also enjoying my university life.
If you’re on the brink of beginning your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
