**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was just about to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and introverted, entering this new phase was rather daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize that this year has been one of significant personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most prominent obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation—I was so daunted by the prospect of socializing that I locked myself in my room throughout the day, too apprehensive to venture out.

Fast forward to now, and I can cheerfully state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through brief conversations with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings. The crucial lesson I took away? Step out of your comfort zone. Even if you feel unprepared, there are ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, remain authentic—Imperial is home to a broad spectrum of individuals, and you will surely find friends who resonate with your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic rigors and the heightened complexity of the coursework. There was a clear transition from A-level studies, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. It was easy to feel daunted and question my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying with such intensity.

What propelled me forward was the understanding that I wasn’t on this journey alone—everyone was grappling with similar issues. If I struggled to grasp a concept, there was a good chance that others were as well. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. Whether it be classmates or instructors, seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and recognize the difficulties we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and provide various forms of academic and pastoral assistance.

I didn’t fully leverage these resources until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can vastly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Reflections

Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I initially felt about starting university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems, from faculty to peer students, exist to help you tackle various challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to savor my time at Imperial, and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

If you are gearing up to start university and feeling apprehensive, understand that this is entirely normal. Take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and seize the remarkable opportunities that lie ahead.
