**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been shy and reserved, plunging into this fresh experience felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey enriched with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the major difficulties I encountered at the beginning of university was developing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could also be a concern for you. On my initial day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking to today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, initiated through casual conversations. I’ve realized that taking that initial step—regardless of how intimidating it may seem—is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared instantly, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to socialize are available. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Expectations

Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and grasping concepts faster than I was.

What assisted me through this was acknowledging that I wasn’t isolated—many of my classmates were grappling with similar issues. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are confused as well. The most beneficial course of action is to ask for assistance, whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to pursue help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Valuing Support from Faculty

One of the aspects I’ve come to greatly value is the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The faculty sincerely wish to see students thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we confront and actively strive to tackle them.

Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had seized that opportunity earlier. Early on, I took the initiative and became a year well-being representative, which helped me form connections with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My key takeaway? Take advantage of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensions I had—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. A vast range of support is available, from staff and fellow students, to aid in navigating the complexities of university life. Most significantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone. Even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve managed to find ways to relish my time at Imperial and fully embrace this remarkable experience.

If you’re on the verge of embarking on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that comes your way.
