**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the cusp of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted nature had prepared for. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was establishing friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may relate to that same sense of trepidation. On my first day in student housing—mere days before the term started—I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as I reflect today, I can assertively state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little small talk with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what wisdom have I gained? First, taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you find yourself feeling unprepared or uneasy initially, don’t be concerned—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new individuals. Second, the greatest advice is to be your authentic self. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to connect with those who have similar interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Existing in such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence—you might observe others studying and begin to question your own abilities.

What aided me through this was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The best action to take is to seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I acquired during my first year—never hesitate to request support from your peers and instructors.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

This leads me to my next point: the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They truly care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has impressed upon me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. There are innumerable support systems established, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never on my own, and that it is indeed feasible to balance academic responsibilities with a rewarding and enjoyable university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
