**Finding a Home in London: My Journey and Reflections**

*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*

It has been nine months since my relocation to London, and although that may appear to be a brief period, I have gained significant insights into residing in this vibrant city. London exhibits remarkable diversity not just in its residents and communities but also in its housing options. Students can choose from a wide array of accommodations, including student residences and private rentals that feature ensuite and shared bathrooms, private and shared rooms, studio apartments, and house shares. While domestic students can effortlessly coordinate apartment visits, international students can utilize platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom to investigate possible living arrangements, their facilities, and their distance from public transportation.

### **Identifying the Ideal Location**

In my hunt for accommodation, I focused on securing a room in Central London to remain in proximity to key attractions, social centers, and, crucially, Imperial’s campus. The city is organized into six concentric zones, with the first two zones being the most central. Thanks to London’s comprehensive public transportation system—including the Underground (Tube), buses, and trains—traveling between zones is quite convenient. However, traveling between zones can become expensive, with daily fares climbing to £5.25. To economize, I typically chose to walk shorter distances rather than rely on public transport. Thankfully, Oyster card options assist in minimizing commuting expenses for students. Moreover, the London Overground and National Rail services extend beyond the Tube network, reaching areas outside of central London. Travel costs on these services vary according to distance and the particular fare structure of the train operator.

Residing in Central London entails high living expenses, but I managed to reduce my rent by sharing a room with a friend who was also a university student. I preferred intercollegiate student accommodations, as they provide an excellent opportunity to connect with students from various backgrounds and similar age groups—something that is often harder to find in private rentals.

### **Key Amenities and Supermarkets**

For me, being near grocery stores was essential. Some popular supermarket chains in London include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, while budget-friendly alternatives like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland deliver more economical options. The presence of key stores like supermarkets and pharmacies nearby is incredibly helpful, particularly during hectic times like exam periods when time is scarce.

### **Selecting the Ideal Neighborhood**

Deciding on a neighborhood to live in can be daunting, as London’s wide-ranging communities each present distinct experiences. Many international students look for areas that resonate with the culture and familiarity of their home nations. For instance:

– **Southall (West London)** – Renowned for its extensive South Asian community, this area features numerous Indian restaurants, grocery stores, and traditional clothing shops.
– **Brixton (South London)** – Celebrated for its Afro-Caribbean community, Brixton boasts a lively music scene and an abundance of cultural richness.
– **Chinatown (West End)** – A bustling hub filled with Chinese eateries, shops, and cultural events, providing an authentic glimpse of Chinese heritage right in the heart of London.

These are merely a few representations of London’s culturally vibrant neighborhoods, each offering a unique community experience.

### **Concluding Thoughts**

The optimal place to live in London relies on your individual preferences, budget, and lifestyle. Whether you emphasize affordability, cultural variety, or closeness to your university, London has something to cater to everyone. As you embark on your search for a home, embrace the city’s varied housing opportunities, discover its lively neighborhoods, and seize the exciting prospects that come with living in one of the world’s most magnificent cities.
