**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing beyond my comfort zone was unfamiliar territory, as I had always been somewhat shy and reserved. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary hurdles I encountered initially was the challenge of making friends. If you are an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I was so overwhelmed by the thought of encountering new people that I spent the entire day in my room, sidestepping social interactions.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small talks with individuals facing similar situations.

So, what has this taught me? Taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle will be available. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse student population, you are sure to connect with others who share your passions and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. There was a stark contrast from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first to the second term. Being in a rigorous academic setting can sometimes shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and start to question your own skills.

What assisted me in navigating this was acknowledging that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The best action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to request support is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Staff Support

When discussing support, one aspect that impressed me was the exceptional staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always willing to engage in conversations regarding any difficulties we face. They demonstrate understanding and maintain consistent communication throughout the year.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to build strong connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Overall, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. There are countless support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to face challenges alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to balance academic demands while enjoying my university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that initial step, ask for help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated, and you’ll discover a supportive community accompanying you every step of the way.
