**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite introverted, fully immersing myself in this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year gone by, I recognize it as a time of considerable personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights did I gain, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming new friendships. This aspect of university life can be particularly frightening, and if you happen to be a prospective student reading this, you might share these concerns. On my first day of moving into my dorm, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of that day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial and in my program, I’ve cultivated a second family.
What insights have I gained from this? I discovered that taking that initial plunge at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections with others. Above all, I learned that being authentic is the most beneficial approach. With a diverse array of individuals on campus, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Increased Academic Demands
Another prominent challenge was acclimating to the heightened academic workload and complexity of the curriculum. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can shake your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone is encountering similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are equally perplexed.
The most significant lesson I gleaned during my first year was the value of seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out when you’re having difficulty is vital. Don’t hesitate to acknowledge when you require support—it’s an integral aspect of the learning journey.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely aspire for your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I wish I had taken better advantage of the pastoral care offered earlier in the year.
At the outset of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to connect more closely with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are myriad opportunities to foster relationships with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the resources available to you—you can never have too much support!
### Concluding Reflections
In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that the apprehensions I held before and during university were largely misplaced. There are numerous support systems at your disposal, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating any obstacles. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying myself with addressing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
