**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt incredibly daunting. Now, looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. But what insights can I share, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may relate to these feelings. On my first day at the student accommodation, just before classes commenced, I spent an entire day in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as I reflect today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has transformed into a second home, and all it took was a handful of brief interactions with others who felt just as I did.

So, what have I come to understand? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, it’s perfectly fine—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

A significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was stark, and an even greater leap occurred between the first and second terms. In such a demanding academic atmosphere, it’s easy to feel self-doubt, particularly when observing others studying rigorously.

What assisted me was realizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If a concept eludes your understanding, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most prudent course of action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to ask for support is one of the most beneficial skills you can hone in your first year.

### The Value of Faculty Support

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback and concerns. Throughout the year, they ensured consistent communication with us, making certain that we had the necessary help.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the available support—it’s impossible to have too much assistance.

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and fellow students, to help ease your transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to acknowledge that I’m never alone. Despite the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered avenues to savor my university experience, and I wouldn’t exchange this journey for anything.

If you’re about to embark on your own adventure at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, reach out for help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that arises.
