### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. In hindsight, this past year has been one of significant personal development, academic hurdles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Fear of Friendship

A significant challenge I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing—just before classes officially commenced—I felt so intimidated that I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to meet anyone.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever known. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it merely required stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you’re not entirely prepared, there are plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who resonate with you.

#### Adapting to Academic Rigor

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of university studies. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, witnessing others study so effectively made me question my capabilities.

What aided me through this was recognizing that everyone encounters difficulties at some point. If you’re confused about a topic, it’s likely that others share your struggle. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Developing the skill to ask for support is one of the most valuable lessons you can learn in your first year.

#### Assistance From Faculty

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They comprehend the challenges we encounter and maintain ongoing communication to tackle any issues.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with staff members. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly rewarding, and there are numerous ways to achieve that. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are numerous resources and individuals eager to support you. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic stress with a fulfilling university experience is possible.

For anyone embarking on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
