**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. As someone who had always been quiet and introverted, stepping into this fresh phase felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a top concern for you as well. I distinctly recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent the whole day inside my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The principal lesson I’ve taken away? Make your move early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. Given the diversity of the student population, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Making the shift from A-levels to university-level studies was quite a leap, and the complexity escalated even further from the first term to the second. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, and I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I compared myself to my peers. Nevertheless, I came to understand that everyone was experiencing similar struggles—if I was grappling with a concept, others likely were too.
My best piece of advice? Don’t shy away from asking for assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, seeking help is a crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Interacting with Faculty
One of the most delightful revelations during my first year was recognizing the supportive nature of the Materials Science department staff. They sincerely want students to excel and are consistently willing to discuss any hurdles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not reaching out sooner.
In the beginning, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university life. My most significant insight? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, my first year has shown me that most of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the appropriate backing from staff and fellow students, I successfully navigated challenges and evolved academically and personally. Most importantly, I discovered that even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines, it’s feasible to enjoy the experience.
If you’re set to begin university, my straightforward advice is: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the journey. You are never alone in this adventure.
