**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was a bundle of nerves, uncertainty, and doubt about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite shy and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
Among the most significant challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might also be a concern for you. I vividly recall my first day at the student accommodations—I was so apprehensive about meeting new people that I spent the whole day holed up in my room, shying away from interaction.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home, and the connections I’ve developed here feel like an extended family. What made the change possible? Simply pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others in similar situations.
The essential lesson? Take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a multitude of ice-breaker events and chances to meet fellow students. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is filled with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to discover like-minded companions.
### Adapting to the Demands of Academia
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and effortlessly grasping concepts.
What helped me persevere? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone in this journey. If I struggled with a subject, it was likely that others did as well. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or lecturers. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
A major comfort throughout my course has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always willing to discuss the challenges we encounter. They comprehend the struggles students face and actively strive to offer solutions.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of my best decisions was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to engage with lecturers and support staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Utilize the assistance available—you can never receive too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehensions and worries I felt before entering university were mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to help navigate the complexities of university life. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone.
Juggling academic demands alongside social life and personal well-being is certainly challenging, but it’s entirely achievable. This year has taught me how to savor the university experience while balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines. If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek support when necessary, and never hesitate to take that initial step.
