**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubt, and a bit of fear regarding what was to come. I was just about to commence my first year in studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been more introverted, entering this new setting felt akin to jumping into the deep end. Now, in retrospect, I can see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the beginning was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a prospective student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I recall spending my first day in residence, secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to the present, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had.
What insights did I glean from this? Firstly, taking that first step is undeniably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexities of university studies. The leap from A-levels was quite evident, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skillset when you observe others studying with assurance.
What supported me during this phase? Recognizing that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find a concept difficult, it’s likely others do as well. The essential part is reaching out for assistance—be it from peers or professors. Learning to seek help is one of the most important abilities you can refine in your first year.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most uplifting surprises of my first year was realizing how approachable the staff in the Materials Science department are. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any obstacles we encounter.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was serving as a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are countless ways to interact with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available to you—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illustrated that the anxieties I experienced prior to starting university were largely uncalled for. There are a myriad of support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to feel isolated. Most crucially, I’ve grasped how to manage academic pressures while also enjoying my time at university.
For anyone on the verge of starting their own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
