**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the journey ahead. I was about to commence my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone naturally shy and introverted, immersing myself in a totally unfamiliar setting was quite intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I can see it has been rich with personal development, obstacles to overcome, and a wealth of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A key challenge I encountered during the early stages of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in my dorm, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting from simple conversations and common experiences. The most significant lesson I’ve learned? Dive in early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, be authentic—Imperial thrives on diversity, and you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was drastic, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s common to feel inundated and question your skills, particularly when observing others study and project confidence.

What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, others might be struggling with it as well. The most effective strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Reaching out for help is not a weakness; it’s a vital skill that will contribute to your success.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most rewarding elements of my first year was the support from faculty members. The Materials Science department is staffed with committed individuals genuinely invested in student success. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and uphold transparent communication all year long.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later, I wish I had earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to interact with faculty, which proved to be tremendously helpful. There are countless ways to connect with instructors, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources available—you can never have an excess of support!

### Concluding Reflections

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university was mostly unfounded. There are myriad support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to tackle this adventure solitary. I’ve discovered how to juggle academic demands alongside enjoyment, and I’ve experienced growth I never anticipated.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, reach out for help when necessary, and above all, make the most of the experience.
