### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had typically been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase of my life was daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year full of personal development, hurdles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day in student accommodation, I spent hours in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has turned into my second home, and all it took were a few brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings. My key takeaway? Embrace that leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t stress—there will be plenty of ice-breakers and social gatherings to help you engage with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university coursework proved to be another considerable challenge. The workload intensified, and the complexity of the subjects increased, particularly between the first and second terms. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you observe your peers studying vigorously.
What aided me the most was the realization that I wasn’t alone—many of my classmates were dealing with similar difficulties. If you find something unclear, it’s likely others are too. The best action you can take is to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, asking for help is essential for achieving success in your first year.
#### The Significance of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most enriching aspects of my journey has been the backing from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ welfare and academic success. They recognize the challenges we encounter and foster open communication throughout the year.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. One of the wisest decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of all the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back, this year has revealed to me that many of my initial fears about starting university were unwarranted. There are abundant support systems in place, from both staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve discovered that I am never genuinely alone and that blending academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is attainable.
If you’re poised to embark on your journey at Imperial, seize every opportunity, seek out support when necessary, and above all, relish the experience. This is a period of growth, learning, and creating lasting memories.
