**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in apprehension, anxiety, and doubts regarding what awaited me. As a fresh first-year student embarking on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I was venturing into uncharted waters. Being naturally reserved and bashful, stepping into this new phase felt overwhelming. In retrospect, I now see a year brimming with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be a significant worry for you as well. On my first day in my student residence, I was so apprehensive about meeting new faces that I spent the entire day in my room, dodging social interactions. However, as the months went by, I cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has become a second home for me, and all it required was pushing beyond my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others in similar situations.
What crucial lesson did I glean? Take that plunge. Even if it feels intimidating, ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial boasts a diverse community, ensuring you’ll encounter like-minded companions.
### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university required adjustment, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more challenging. At times, witnessing others study effectively made me doubt my capabilities.
What proved beneficial during this process? Acknowledging that everyone experiences difficulties at some stage. If you find something perplexing, rest assured that many others are navigating the same struggles. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness; it’s a vital skill that will contribute to your success.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
A key highlight of my first year was the exceptional support I received from the staff in the Materials department. They truly desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
Initially, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with faculty members. This experience illuminated the advantages of engaging with academic staff—they are dedicated to your success, and establishing rapport can significantly enhance your academic experience. My primary takeaway? Leverage the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of my initial trepidation was unfounded. The encouragement from both faculty and peers was instrumental in my journey. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic rigor with personal enjoyment is attainable.
For those on the cusp of beginning their university adventure: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and above all, savor the experience.
