**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation about what the future held. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted and private, entering this new phase felt quite intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I now recognize a journey marked by personal development, numerous challenges, and extraordinary experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my very first day in student housing, just prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with fellow students who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what have I gleaned from this? Taking that first leap is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breakers and activities are designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I learned that being true to yourself is the most effective strategy—Imperial boasts a diverse community, and you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant hurdle was acclimating to the increased workload and the complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was quite pronounced, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when you observe others engrossed in their studies.
Nevertheless, a crucial insight was recognizing that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential lessons of the first year.
### Leveraging Staff Support
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and are aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and offered various forms of assistance.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made a brave choice by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to establish rapport with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with the staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the available resources—one can never have too much support.
### Conclusion
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. There are extensive support networks in place, both from faculty and fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never alone on this journey.
This year has taught me how to balance stress with enjoyment, embrace novel experiences, and pursue growth both academically and personally. If you are about to embark on your university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and savor the journey.
