### Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was ahead. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Fear of New Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your principal worries as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, all thanks to stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what have I taken away from this? Taking that crucial first step early is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t stress—there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections. Most importantly, just be yourself. With a vibrant mix of students, you’re bound to find individuals who resonate with your passions and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Pressures

Another significant challenge was coming to terms with the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be even tougher.

At times, observing others studying effectively left me unsure of my own capabilities. However, I quickly came to understand that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I was grappling with a topic, it was likely that others were too. The major takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from peers or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills to cultivate during your first year.

#### The Significance of Support Networks

One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the amazing backing from the teaching staff. The faculty genuinely cares about student success and comprehends the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year, making sure our concerns are acknowledged and addressed.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later on, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with staff, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are various avenues to build rapport with faculty, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university journey. My key lesson here? Utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the fears and anxieties I felt before beginning university were largely unfounded. With the proper support from both staff and fellow students, those worries transformed into manageable challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to navigate academic demands while enjoying university life.

If you’re poised to commence your own adventure at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated.
