**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into such a major life change felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I perceive it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences. So, what have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Confronting the Initial Hurdle: Forming Connections
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the beginning of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with some light conversation with people who were just as anxious as I was.
So, what lessons did I take away? I discovered that taking a bold step at the year’s outset is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking activities and chances to interact with others. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Trials
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a demanding academic setting can at times shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in overcoming this sensation was the realization that we’re all in similar situations. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others are grappling with it too. The most significant lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the teaching staff, don’t hold back from asking for help when you need it.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of support, I must highlight the outstanding staff in the Materials department. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are fully cognizant of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in consistent communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing advice. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier.
At the start of the year, I stepped up by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This role facilitated a deeper connection with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage you to pursue them. My main takeaway from this experience is to leverage the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university, and even throughout the year, was often unwarranted. There exists a considerable amount of support from both staff and fellow students to assist you through any difficulties. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to find a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
