**Reflecting on My Initial Year: Insights Gained and Development within Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and reserved, delving into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what did this year impart to me, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you are a future student reading this, you may be grappling with similar worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I awkwardly spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too nervous to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all thanks to engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations.
What lesson did I take from this experience? I realized it’s always worth taking that first step. If you aren’t entirely ready or at ease, that’s alright! There are numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to foster connections with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your vibe.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. It was certainly a significant leap from A-levels and an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes shake your self-assurance. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate by comparison.
What helped me navigate through this was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, others likely are too. The most vital lesson I gained in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from your peers or faculty, reaching out is crucial.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter various obstacles. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s commencement, I took a risk by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge relationships with the faculty, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here? Do not hesitate to utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
In conclusion, this past year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced, both prior to and during university, was often unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and classmates, I learned that I am never alone. More importantly, I discovered the ability to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
