**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student, and the idea of venturing into the unfamiliar was intimidating for someone who tends to be more on the reserved side. Now, reflecting back, I recognize an academic year that has been rich with personal development, challenges, and a significant amount of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Forming Friendships: Taking the Initial Step
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I have forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at Imperial and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family, which all commenced with brief conversations with others who were in similar situations.
So, what did I realize? I found that taking that first step at the year’s beginning is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events crafted to help you meet others. Most importantly, I learned that the best thing you can do is to simply be yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across your course and the university, you’re sure to find those who share your vibe.
### Managing the Workload: You’re Not On Your Own
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was indeed a clear leap from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can easily undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling like you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the truth: everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s a fair bet that others are facing similar difficulties.
The essential takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might just be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your freshman year. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching faculty, asking for help is vital.
### Assistance from the Faculty: Do Not Hesitate to Connect
Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for your success and are cognizant of the hurdles students encounter. They engage in ongoing communication with us throughout the year and address any concerns we raise. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done it earlier.
At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to better familiarize myself with the faculty, which has proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My recommendation? Fully utilize the support and assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!
### Concluding Thoughts: Surmounting Anxiety and Embracing University Experiences
In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unwarranted. There exists a multitude of support systems, from staff to fellow students, that can help mitigate those fears. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines.
