**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

A significant challenge at the start of university was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share those feelings. On my first day in student accommodation, right before the term started, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to go out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from a few straightforward conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what’s the takeaway? Taking that initial step is invaluable. Even if you don’t believe you’re fully prepared, there will be countless social events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be your authentic self—Imperial is comprised of a vibrant mix of individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even tougher. It’s easy to feel swamped, especially when observing others study and starting to second-guess your own skills.

What supported me during this time was understanding that everyone faces difficulties eventually. If you don’t grasp something, odds are, others are struggling too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is among the most important abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Staff

One of the standout aspects of my journey has been the remarkable backing from the faculty. They sincerely want students to flourish and are always receptive to our suggestions and discussions regarding any obstacles we encounter.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my course. This opportunity allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with lecturers and tutors, and taking these opportunities can significantly enrich your university experience. My key piece of advice? Utilize the available support—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was unwarranted. There’s an abundance of assistance from both staff and fellow students, and no one needs to navigate the journey in isolation. Most crucially, I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while also savoring my university life.

For those about to commence their own university journey, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
