**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a swirl of nerves, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was on the horizon. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt akin to jumping straight into the deep end. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gathered, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my housing, just prior to the term’s start, I spent an entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I reflect today, I can assertively claim that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has transformed into a second home, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations.
What did I discover? Taking that initial plunge at the year’s outset is invariably rewarding. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and avenues to connect with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university life was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second posed even more challenges. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your competence, particularly when observing others studying and seemingly mastering concepts with ease.
What helped me navigate this was the understanding that everyone faces the same challenges. If you struggle with a topic, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most prudent action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can nurture in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Wellness Programs
A notable highlight of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely desires for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. They comprehend the obstacles we encounter and offer ongoing communication and support throughout the academic year.
Initially, I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support, but I now wish I had done so at an earlier stage. Early in the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my class. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with academic staff, and taking advantage of this can significantly enrich your university experience. My greatest takeaway? Fully leverage the support at your disposal—you can never have an excess of help.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has illuminated the fact that the apprehensions and worries I held prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. There exists a wealth of support from both faculty and classmates. Above all, I’ve come to appreciate that I’m never genuinely alone. Despite the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to savor my university experience and make the most of every chance.
For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and approach the experience with an open heart. You’ll be astonished by the extent of your growth along the journey.
