**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, entering this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time rich with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the greatest obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a significant source of worry for you as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting newcomers that I ended up spending the whole day in my room, sidestepping any social engagement.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all came down to pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and striking up small conversations with others who were in similar situations.
So, what did I take away from this? It’s always beneficial to make that first move. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to help you connect with others. Above all, just stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from first to second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or to second-guess your capabilities when observing peers who appear more assured in their studies.
What got me through this was the acknowledgment that I wasn’t the only one struggling. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that many others were facing the same challenges. The best lesson I learned was to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Seeking help is not a weakness; it’s one of the smartest steps you can take in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most significant elements of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They truly care about students’ health and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
Though I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with staff, which was extremely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with lecturers and support personnel, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I have come to realize that the fears and worries I harbored before entering university were largely unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s entirely possible to juggle academic challenges while enjoying and enriching university life.
For anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
