**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what the future held. As a newcomer embarking on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I was entering a realm that was completely new to me. Stepping out of my comfort zone and taking risks was not something I was accustomed to. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a plethora of unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
A significant challenge I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a primary concern for you as well. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent a whole day confined to my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has transformed into a second home, and all it required was a little small talk with others who shared my situation.
The essential lesson? Take the plunge early. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, just be genuine. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find individuals who share your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even tougher. It’s all too easy to feel daunted, particularly when witnessing others studying and beginning to doubt your own capabilities.
What aided my journey was the realization that everyone encounters difficulties at various points. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most effective action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills you can nurture in your first year.
### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, ensuring we had access to the necessary resources.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university was unwarranted. There are an abundance of support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ready to assist in overcoming challenges. I have realized that I am never truly alone, and I have learned how to juggle academic demands while savoring university life.
