**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and anticipation as I geared up to commence my initial year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial. Being inherently shy and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt intimidating. However, in hindsight, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and remarkable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the foremost obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might be concerned about this too. I vividly recall spending my initial day in student housing cloistered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, looking at where I am today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

The main takeaway? Dare to make that first move. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and social gatherings aimed at facilitating connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial harbors a multitude of diverse individuals, and you are bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Rigor

The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was yet another challenge. The intensity and volume of work escalated considerably, particularly between the first and second terms. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I observed my peers studying diligently. However, I soon discovered that I was not alone—many of my classmates were grappling with similar difficulties.

The most important lesson I garnered? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, asking for help is essential. Everyone is navigating the same waters, and teamwork can significantly ease the journey.

### Recognizing the Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my course was the outstanding support from the teaching staff. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

In the beginning, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to create connections with staff members. This experience highlighted the importance of interacting with faculty—not just for academic assistance but also for personal growth. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources at your disposal. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my journey, my first year at Imperial has shown me that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The university provides an abundance of support, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate the complexities of student life. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never alone, and it’s achievable to strike a balance between academic demands and enjoyment and personal development.

If you’re on the verge of embarking on your university adventure, embrace the experience, take risks, and remember that assistance is always at hand when you require it.
