**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. As someone who has always considered themselves shy and introverted, this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the foremost challenges I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this concern is likely among your top worries as well. I recall moving into my residence a few days before classes commenced and spending an entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, as I sit here today, I can proudly claim that I’ve made some of my closest friends ever.
The main takeaway? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find individuals who share your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more taxing. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you witness others studying fervently.
What aided me was recognizing that everyone experiences similar feelings. If you’re grappling with a particular topic, it is likely others are, too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### Leveraging Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to prosper and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in touch with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the most rewarding choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to establish rapport with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize all available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Main Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that many of the apprehensions I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There is an abundance of support accessible, both from staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely isolated and that balancing academic responsibilities with a fulfilling university life is achievable.
If you are about to commence your journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is this: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that presents itself. University is a period of transformation, and with the right perspective, it can be an extraordinarily gratifying experience.
