**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and questions about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, jumping into this fresh experience felt daunting. Reflecting on the journey now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, academic trials, and numerous pleasurable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the primary hurdles I encountered initially was fostering friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be one of your prominent worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I found myself ensconced in my room for hours, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, as time unfolded, I gradually cultivated solid friendships with classmates and others. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve discovered a second family in this community at Imperial.

So, what was my takeaway? Taking that initial leap is invariably the most difficult, yet also the most fulfilling. If you’re feeling apprehensive, fret not—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to connect. Above all, just remain authentic. Given the diversity of the student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.

### Navigating the Academic Obstacles

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-level studies to university life was profound, and the transition between the first and second terms was even more strenuous. It’s easy to become disheartened, especially when observing others engrossed in their studies, leading to self-doubt.

What aided me through this period was acknowledging that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same difficulties. The most constructive step you can take is to seek assistance—whether from colleagues or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Faculty Support

On the topic of support, the educators in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They earnestly wish for their students to thrive and remain receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they ensured ongoing communication with us, addressing our inquiries and providing direction.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I regret not doing so sooner. One of the finest decisions I made was to take on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are countless ways to engage with the academic staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My most prominent insight? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support systems in place—you can never have an excess of help!

### Concluding Reflections

As I look back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt prior to beginning university was mostly unwarranted. An abundant range of support exists, both from the staff and fellow students, to assist you in facing challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while savoring university life.

For anyone about to embark on their own academic adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take that first step, reach out for help whenever necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you just might have the time of your life.
