### Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped by anxiety, uncertainty, and dread about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what have I acquired, and what is my current stance?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I vividly remember my first day in student housing—I was so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day in my room, far too anxious to meet new people.
Now, looking at where I stand today, I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I could ever ask for. I’ve discovered a second family during my time at Imperial, and all it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others who were feeling the same way.
What did I take away from this experience? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaker events and options to meet new people are available. Most crucially, just be yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find companions who share your interests.
#### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another notable challenge was getting accustomed to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was quite pronounced, and the transition from the first term to the second term was even more strenuous. At times, I felt inundated with work and questioned my capabilities, especially when observing classmates studying diligently.
Nonetheless, I soon realized that everyone was navigating the same challenges. If I found something confusing, it was likely others were too. The most effective method to tackle this? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is arguably the most important lesson I learned in my first year—never shy away from seeking guidance from your peers and instructors.
#### Encouragement from Faculty and Support Services
One of the most reassuring elements of my program was the amazing support provided by the teaching staff. The professors genuinely care about student success and are always willing to listen to our concerns. They are aware of the difficulties we encounter and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Take full advantage of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that many of my initial fears were unfounded. Whether it involved making friends, managing academic challenges, or reaching out for help, I discovered that I was never truly alone. University presents its hurdles, but with the right attitude and a supportive network, thriving and enjoying the journey is entirely achievable.
If you’re about to embark on your path at Imperial, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly natural. But also recognize that countless opportunities are available for growth, connection, and success. Take that plunge—you won’t regret it.
