**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize a period marked by significant personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what exactly have I gleaned, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was building friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships—relationships that feel akin to a second family.

What did I gain from this experience? I recognized that taking that initial step is vital. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. And above all, simply be yourself. With such a wide variety of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

### Managing the Academic Load

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the escalated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to become daunted and question your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly mastering concepts quicker than you.

What aided me in navigating this was the assurance that everyone shares a similar journey. If a concept eludes your understanding, chances are that others are grappling with it as well. The critical lesson here is to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. This, perhaps, stands as the most essential lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for support.

### The Encouraging Faculty

Speaking of assistance, I cannot stress enough how fantastic the faculty in the Materials department is. They genuinely aspire for student success and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open communication and exhibited empathy towards our difficulties.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I wish I had done so much earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the bold decision to serve as a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty on a deeper level, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have an excess of it!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was primarily unwarranted. With the vast support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I discovered how to harmonize enjoying myself with coping with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
