**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university, and venturing into the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting now, I realize this year has been packed with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A particularly intimidating challenge I encountered was the process of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries too. On my first day in the student residence, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who feel like a new family.

So, what lesson did I derive from this? The most beneficial action you can take is to make that initial move. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be countless ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others studying, but it’s crucial to keep in mind that everyone is experiencing similar struggles.

If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are facing the same difficulty. The smartest thing you can do is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the outstanding support from the faculty. They earnestly want their students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources available until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I harbored before entering university were unfounded. There’s a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help navigate the hurdles. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment.

For anyone about to start their university adventure—embrace the journey, take those bold steps, and remember that help is always accessible when you require it.
