**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding the path ahead. I was on the brink of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt intimidating. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major challenge I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. On my first day in student housing, prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and it just took some casual conversation with others who were in similar situations. My key takeaway? Make that move at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is home to a variety of individuals, and you are sure to find friends who resonate with your vibe.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another major obstacle was getting accustomed to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was quite apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more challenging. It’s natural to feel inundated and question your competence, especially when witnessing peers studying with what seems to be greater confidence.
What assisted me through this was coming to terms with the fact that everyone faces challenges at some point. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most effective action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning how to ask for help is among the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Role of Faculty Support
Speaking of assistance, the Materials Science department at Imperial has been outstanding. The faculty genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to input. They recognize the struggles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication year-round.
While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a step forward and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with the faculty, and doing so can enhance your university experience significantly. My advice? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension and worries I harbored before embarking on my university journey were largely unfounded. Numerous support networks are available, from staff to fellow students, to help you manage the hurdles you may face. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that enjoying university life is achievable, even amidst the stress of examinations and deadlines.
If you’re on the verge of beginning your adventure at Imperial, embrace the journey, take those bold steps, and remember that support is perpetually at hand. You can do it!
