### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what awaited me. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, in retrospect, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered early in my journey was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be among your foremost concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new acquaintances that I spent the entire day secluded in my room, evading social engagements.

However, as the year progressed, I began to forge meaningful friendships with peers from my course and the university at large. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who truly feel like an extended family. What made the difference? Simply initiating casual conversations with those who were experiencing the same uncertainties.

My primary lesson? Make the effort. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with new individuals. And above all, be authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to encounter those with similar interests.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another key obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was quite pronounced, and there was an even larger shift from the first to the second term. It was easy to feel inundated, particularly when observing others engrossed in intense study—it sometimes led me to doubt my own capabilities.

What aided me in overcoming this? Reminding myself that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, likely others were as well. The most vital lesson I learned was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or instructors. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s one of the most crucial skills you can hone during your freshman year.

#### The Significance of Staff Support

A standout aspect of my experience has been the tremendous support from the Materials Science department. The staff truly care about students’ success and are aware of the obstacles we encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and consistently willing to communicate.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it sooner. Early on, I took a bold step and volunteered as a Year Well-being Representative, which allowed me to connect with staff and gain insights into the support options available. Establishing relationships with your professors and academic staff can be incredibly advantageous, and I wholeheartedly recommend utilizing the resources provided.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced before and during my university journey was frequently unfounded. Support is always at hand, whether from educational staff or fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle academic pressures while savoring university life.

For anyone about to commence their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: make the commitment, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ll evolve more than you ever imagined.
