**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with a cocktail of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was getting ready to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences. But what have I gained from it, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most fearsome aspects of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the semester officially started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have transformed into a second family for me, both in my course and within the broader university community.

So, what did I take away from this? The essential step is to take that first plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be a plethora of ice-breaker activities and events designed to foster connections. And above all, just embrace your true self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and the university, you will undoubtedly find those who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Demands

Adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the jump between the first and second terms was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic atmosphere can shake one’s confidence, particularly when observing peers studying hard and questioning if you’re lagging behind.

What supported me during this period was the realization that we are all in a similar situation. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or academic staff, don’t hesitate to reach out for support.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of staff, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and fully understand the obstacles students encounter. They keep open lines of communication throughout the year, providing guidance and compassion. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I made a bold choice to become a well-being representative for my year group. This position helped me connect more with the staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can have a remarkable impact on your university experience. My most significant insight? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during my university journey was often misplaced. The backing of both staff and fellow students has been priceless in navigating various challenges. I have discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to harmonize enjoying life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
