**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, ambiguity, and eagerness as I geared up to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Entering into the unknown was intimidating, particularly for someone who has always been rather introverted. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a journey of personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary hurdles I encountered early on was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be something that concerns you as well. I recall spending my initial day in student housing retreating to my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to others. However, fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The essential takeaway? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel anxious, there will be a multitude of icebreaker events and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, remain authentic—Imperial is teeming with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to encounter friends who share your interests.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
The transition from A-levels to university-level academics presented another challenge. The volume of work increased substantially, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly intense. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when observing others studying diligently.
What assisted me was the realization that everyone else was facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are puzzled as well—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Asking for help from peers and faculty is one of the most critical skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Seeking Assistance
One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the helpful staff. They sincerely want students to thrive and are always receptive to input. Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had tapped into it earlier.
At the beginning, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My principal lesson? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, my first year has shown me that the anxiety and uncertainties I faced before entering university were mostly unwarranted. With the right backing from staff and peers, I learned that I was never truly alone. More importantly, I uncovered how to manage academic demands while savoring university life.
For anyone about to commence their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek help when necessary, and don’t shy away from making that first move. You’ll develop more than you ever anticipated.
