**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. As I prepared to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found it difficult to step beyond my comfort zone. Looking back now, the year has been one of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate to those feelings. On my initial day in student housing, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I reflect today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships of my life. Imperial has morphed into a second family for me, all thanks to initiating small conversations with people in similar situations.
So, what has been my takeaway? Taking that first initiative is always rewarding. If you’re not feeling ready, that’s perfectly fine—there will be plenty of ice-breaking events and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more formidable. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with fervor.
What helped me persevere was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re finding a particular concept tough, it’s likely that others are too. The best step you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Faculty Support
A standout aspect of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science faculty. They are truly invested in student success and are always receptive to input. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, making sure our concerns were acknowledged.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I’d recognized its importance sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the plunge and became a well-being representative for my group. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Tap into the available support—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Final Thoughts
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before and during my university experience was often unwarranted. There are ample support systems available, ranging from faculty to peers, that can help facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and it is feasible to navigate academic hurdles while enjoying a fulfilling university life.
As you embark on your journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is this: take that leap, ask for support whenever needed, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
