**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, trials, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the primary obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re considering joining, this could be one of your main concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted that I remained in my room the entire day, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here now, I’m pleased to share that I’ve established some of the strongest friendships of my life.
I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who shared my situation. What I learned? Make that move early. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to socialize. More importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student demographic, you are sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant hurdle was getting used to the heavy workload and the complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even tougher. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you observe others studying and begin to question your own skills.
What aided me during this period was realizing that we are all in similar circumstances. If you find something challenging, likely, others are too. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or professors. Learning to ask for help is among the most important abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us and offered various support mechanisms.
I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral assistance available until later in the year, which I regret not doing sooner. At the outset, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This experience enabled me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to foster connections with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. An abundance of support systems exists, from staff to fellow classmates, ensuring no one faces obstacles in solitude. I’ve discovered that balancing academic demands with enjoyment and making the most of campus life is indeed achievable.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. You’ll grow beyond your expectations.
