**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year of study in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and timid, embarking on this new path felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
A significant concern upon entering university was the challenge of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I wound up spending the entire day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has essentially transformed into a second family, and all it necessitated was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with fellow students navigating the same experiences.
So, what has this taught me? Firstly, taking that first step is invariably rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with others. Secondly, the paramount advice is to remain authentic. With such a rich and varied student community, you’re sure to locate peers who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge involved acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel daunted or to question your skills when you observe others engaging in intense study sessions. Nevertheless, one of the most crucial lessons I absorbed was that everyone shares this journey. If you’re finding certain topics difficult, it’s likely that others are facing the same struggles.
The best course of action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or your instructors. Learning to ask for help early on can profoundly influence your academic journey.
### The Encouraging Staff and Student Support
One of the standout elements of my first year was realizing how supportive the faculty within the Materials Science department truly are. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are receptive to input. They acknowledge the hurdles we encounter and maintain an open line of communication to tackle our concerns.
Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the start of the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my year. This role provided me with the opportunity to connect with staff members, which proved to be highly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that is offered—it’s impossible to have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the apprehensions and uncertainties I felt before embarking on my university journey were largely unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, from both the staff and my fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that it is entirely feasible to navigate academic rigors while also enjoying the university experience.
If you are about to begin your university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary, and welcome the journey that lies ahead.
